ALTERNATIVE SUMMER BREAK

From June 6-14, 2007 17 students from the University of Florida traveled to Kharkov and Konotop(Ukraine) where they joint their peers from Kharkov Hillel to paint apartments of Jewish in need, refurbish Jewish Community facilities within the limits of the Alternative Summer Break project. For the first time refurbishing of children playground in one of the Kharkov urban districts was included in the schedule. American students took place in the performance at the memorial ceremony in Drobitsky Yar realized by the students of Kharkov Hillel. They also met with the community leaders and local youth to discuss the challenges facing Ukrainian Jewry. This project is a partnership between JDC, University of Florida Hillel and Kharkov Hillel and is financially supported by the grants from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation and the Mandel L and Madeleine H. Berman Foundation.
